Vulnerable family members include the children, older adults and family members with physical or mental disability of infirmity.
Children who were victims or witnesses of abuse carry scars of their experiences into adulthood, often seeing the negative consequences of the trauma manifest through lost jobs, troubled intimate relationships, challenges forming trusting relationships and unhealthy coping behaviours.
Counselling can help children make sense of what they have experienced. Children also need to know what they can do when they are hurt, fearful or confused.
When help is provided to the family, it also helps to increase the safety of the older adults and family members with physical or mental disability of infirmity, who are often limited or unable to protect themselves due to their condition.
